What Is Integrative Health

And How It Helps You Find Your Root Cause

You’ve probably heard the term “integrative health” floating around on podcasts or Instagram, usually alongside words like holistic and root cause. But what does it actually mean?

If you’ve ever felt like your symptoms were being brushed off with “your labs look normal,” or if you’ve bounced between supplements, specialists, and Google rabbit holes — you’re not alone. Integrative health steps in to connect the dots your body has been trying to show you all along.

Let’s break down what this approach really is (and why it’s the secret sauce behind lasting healing).

What Integrative Health Really Means

Integrative health looks at you as a whole system — not a collection of parts. Instead of treating isolated symptoms, it asks: what’s the deeper imbalance that started this chain reaction?

Where traditional medicine often focuses on managing symptoms, integrative health blends the best of both worlds — science and natural healing — to restore balance.

Try to shift your perspective:

  • Fatigue might not be “just motherhood.” It could be low minerals or sluggish detox pathways.

  • Mood swings might not be “just hormones.” They could be tied to gut health or inflammation.

  • Bloating might not be “just stress.” It could be bacteria or yeast overgrowth.

When we stop treating symptoms like random events and start seeing them as signals, everything changes.

What “Root Cause” Actually Refers To

Your body is incredibly intelligent. It’s not broken — it’s communicating.

A root cause is the real reason your symptoms exist. It’s the imbalance underneath the surface that, when addressed, allows your body to rebalance naturally. For example:

  • Low energy might stem from adrenal stress, blood sugar swings, or mitochondrial dysfunction.

  • Skin issues might tie back to liver overload or gut permeability.

  • PMS could trace to poor detoxification of estrogen or mineral depletion.

When you address these deeper roots, symptoms often fade as a byproduct of healing.

The DESTRESS Protocol as a Foundation

One of my favorite frameworks (and one I use with clients) is Dr. Stephen Cabral’s DESTRESS Protocol. It’s a simple but powerful system for rebalancing the body:

  • Diet – eating whole, anti-inflammatory foods

  • Exercise – movement that builds, not depletes

  • Stress – learning to downshift your nervous system

  • Toxins – supporting gentle detox pathways and remove toxins

  • Rest – prioritizing sleep and recovery

  • Emotions – addressing mindset and emotional health

  • Supplements – filling in nutritional gaps

  • Success mindset – believing your body can heal

(Yes, that last “S” is intentional. Healing takes the right mindset as much as it does minerals!)

This protocol forms the backbone of my postpartum and preconception programs because it respects how all systems work together — hormones, digestion, detox, and mood.

Why This Approach Works for Women and Moms

Women’s bodies are beautifully complex — and let’s be honest, a bit demanding at times. Pregnancy, postpartum recovery, hormonal shifts, and stress all draw heavily on your nutrient and energy reserves.

Integrative health meets women where they are.
It helps uncover:

  • Why fatigue persists long after “baby sleep” ends

  • Why mood dips or anxiety surface unexpectedly

  • Why cycles become irregular or painful

  • Why digestion suddenly feels unpredictable

Instead of offering another quick fix, integrative care rebuilds the foundation your body depends on — minerals, microbiome balance, liver support, and stress resilience.

Because when your body is balanced, you don’t have to fight for energy, focus, or calm. They return naturally.

The Bottom Line

Integrative health isn’t about perfection, restriction, or endless testing.
It’s about understanding your body’s messages and giving it what it truly needs to heal.

You deserve to feel like yourself again — not just “fine.” And finding your root cause is the first step there.
